Your Questions are answered

You will find the Answers to some questions we are asked frequently, this information is updated regularly with new Q&As.

Q, >> Hi there, does it matter which way round I use the additives? I see on your site that you suggest we use the diesel injector cleaner first and then the diesel complete. If however it’s who is the other way round is there any concerns or how badly does it impact the results?

A, With regards to the Diesel Injector Cleaner, add this directly to your tank first, this is a one shot treatment. 100ml will treat 100litres of fuel. With the Diesel Fuel Complete, add this to your tank as an after treatment to use at a preventative level. When you next fuel up.

Q, Once added to the diesel tank, for how long do Diesel Bug Treatment and Diesel Bug Complete remain effective (lifespan)? Thank you.

A, The Diesel Bug treatment and Diesel fuel Complete will remain sufficiently active for over a year at both high and low temperatures.

Q,, If you buy the kit with the 3 different bottles (Triple Pack) do you put it all in at once? How much do you add?

A, A triple pack offering a complete all-round fuel system package. It Kills Diesel Bug, It Cleans the fuel system and Protects the fuel. Consists of our Diesel Bug Treatment, Diesel Injector Cleaner and Diesel Fuel Complete ensuring your engine and fuel are fully protected. Add DBT & DIC together, and then Add DFC as anafter treatment to use at a preventative level. (next time you fill up) The does rate is 100ml to 100 litres. Overdosing does not harm the engine.

Q, I use the boat regularly and have the engine running about 2 hours a week. Do I need to add a fuel additive?

A, Due to the decrease in fuel quality and the consequences of getting diesel bug I would always recommend using an additive. An all round additive such as Marine 16 Diesel Fuel complete is a great product to prevent diesel bug and also keep your fuel and engine in great condition.

Q, I have been using a different make of Fuel additive but have been recommended MARINE 16 on numerous times, If I use another make will there be a problem?

A, Fuel additives tend to fall into 2 categories, enzymatic and biocidal. The choice of a fuel additive is something that crafters will pick and swear by for many years. If you currently use andenzymatic treatment then switching to a biocidal one such as Diesel Bug Treatment will deactivate the enzymatic one as this is the job of a biocidal product. If you currently use a biocidal then switching to another biocidal product will no cause any problems.

Q, Does it make sense to change brands of diesel bug treatment every few years. Do the bugs get resistant after some time? Or do the manufacturers change ‘the recipe periodically anyway?

A, The important thing when using a fuel treatment is that you ensure it is a full spectrum Biocide. This way, even if the bug mutates, you will still 'kill the bug'

Q, We use about 15-20 litres of diesel per year in our small sailing cruiser. The fuel tank holds 50 litres so topping it up for winter storage is not practical. The diesel in the tank now is over a year old. What should we do for both winter storage and in regular use during the season to ensure the fuel remains good and usable?

A, The normal school of thought is that you must top the tank up for laying up in the winter. However, with the decrease in fuel quality and the increase of water coming in with diesel I wonder if this is the best course of action. If you are topping up your tank with fuel that will then deteriorate over the winter then have you not defeated the object. In your situation, I would dose the tank with Marine 16 Diesel Fuel Complete. This will ensure that as your fuel ages you will still get good performance form your motor. Also, DFC has a preventative dose of Diesel Bug Treatment in it as well so you are covered all round.

Q, Do Diesel bugs prefer Red Diesel? If I am running white Diesel will I be ok without an additive?

A, Diesel bug can present in Red or White Diesel. The crucial part of this is ensuring that you have good fuel management - removing water, keeping fuel as fresh as possible and also using a regular treatment to keep the fuel in great condition
