Flame RetardantI first learned of the situation regarding flame retarding of UK & EU leisure craft upholstery when commercially coding my Bavaria 41 and I had to treat my upholstery and curtains in order to pass the MCA280, Annex 10 test. Unfortunately the product I used turned my nice blue seating pink!
Since then I have obtained the European rights to manufacture and distribute M111 Universal Flame Retardant Spray. This is a very easy to apply non-toxic, non-staining spray. It will withstand every-day wear and tear for the life of the treated cloth. It will not however withstand washing or repeated soakings. If this occurs or a wash is required simply re-spray afterwards. It will withstand dry-cleaning.
Boat construction in the EU comes under the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) where there are no requirements for upholstery and curtains to be flame proofed.
For coded vessels MCN 280(R) Annex 10 covers the requirements for small commercial vessels i.e. those under 24m in length. M111 Universal Flame Retardant passes this test easily.
Amazingly there is a requirement on upholstery for homes, caravans, RV's and cars but not for boats.
As a RYA instructor the first advice we give on courses is a safety brief. One of the main topics is fire risk, fuel, hot engines, gas, ignitable materials. I cannot think of many situations worse than a boat for having a fire.
Use M111 Universal Flame Retardant on fabrics, foams and untreated wood.
